Finding God in the Small Moments

Finding God in the Small Moments

It’s easy to look for God in the big events of our lives, weddings, baptisms, graduations, or even the storms that threaten us during hurricane season. But lately, I’ve been thinking about how often God reveals Himself in the small, everyday moments.

It might be in the smile of a neighbor as you walk to church, the laughter of your kids after dinner, or the quiet peace you feel when the sun sets over the ocean. These moments don’t demand our attention, but if we slow down and pay attention, they can become reminders of God’s presence.

Jesus Himself taught us about this when He said:

  • “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.” (Matthew 13:31) Something so small, a seed, can grow into something so great, just as the little blessings of each day grow into a deeper awareness of God’s love.

I’m reminded too of Elijah on the mountain:

  • “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12) God doesn’t always arrive in the dramatic moments. Sometimes, He speaks in whispers. In the small mercies that we might otherwise overlook.

So maybe the challenge for us this week is simple. Look for God in the ordinary. Notice the breeze on a hot afternoon, the patience of a friend, or the unexpected joy of sharing a meal. These are not accidents. They are gifts.

And when we recognize them, our hearts naturally turn to gratitude. As Paul wrote:

  • “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

The truth is, God is always with us...sometimes in mighty waves, sometimes in gentle whispers. If we train our eyes and hearts to see Him in the little things, we’ll never be without His presence.
