Back From My Morning Ride: A Reflection on the Ten Commandments

Back From My Morning Ride: A Reflection on the Ten Commandments

I just got back home from my morning bike ride — one of my favorite ways to start the day clear-headed and grateful. As always, I had my headphones in, listening to the Catechism in a Year podcast. Today’s topic really struck a chord with me: God’s Ten Commandments.

Hearing them laid out again reminded me how much our world needs to revisit these timeless truths. The way so many people treat each other today — online, at work, in traffic, even in families — shows just how far we drift when we forget these simple, powerful instructions from God.

So I thought I’d share them here, along with a quick thought on how each one still speaks directly to our lives today:

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

👉 Don’t make idols out of money, status, or yourself — put God first, not the things that fade away.

2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

👉 Speak of God with reverence — don’t treat His name like an exclamation or a joke.

3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

👉 Rest matters. So does worship. Slow down and give your soul a chance to breathe.

4. Honor your father and your mother.

👉 Respect your parents, care for them, forgive them — family ties are sacred.

5. You shall not kill.

👉 Value every human life. Be pro-life in the biggest sense — in how you speak, act, and treat others.

6. You shall not commit adultery.

👉 Be faithful in marriage and pure in your relationships. Respect the vows you make.

7. You shall not steal.

👉 Don’t take what isn’t yours — not just things, but time, credit, or trust.

8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

👉 Speak the truth. Lies destroy trust and community.

9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.

👉 Guard your eyes and heart — envy ruins relationships and cheapens love.

10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

👉 Be content. Gratitude brings peace — envy brings bitterness.

When we look around today, it’s easy to see where we fall short. But it’s not about pointing fingers — it’s about self-reflection.

So, my encouragement for you (and for myself!) is simple: take a moment today to look at your own life in the light of these commandments. Ask God for help where you struggle. Let’s be the kind of people who show the world what it means to love God and love our neighbor.

Together, we can do better.

Stay blessed, friends — and keep pedaling forward! 🚴‍♂️✨
