A Sunday to Serve: Finding Joy at the Altar

A Sunday to Serve: Finding Joy at the Altar

Today is Sunday—a day that fills my heart with joy and purpose. For many, it’s a day of rest. For others, it’s family time. For me, it’s all that—and something more. Sunday means it’s time for Mass, and lately, it has come to mean something even deeper: the chance to serve God directly at His altar.

I’ve recently taken on the role of altar server, assisting my priest during the celebration of the Eucharist. Every time I put on my robe and step into the sanctuary, I feel an overwhelming sense of peace and calling. This isn’t just something I do—this is something God has placed on my heart.

There’s a sacredness to being that close to the altar. To handle the vessels, help with the preparation of the gifts, and support the priest in small but important ways—it’s humbling. I get a front-row seat to the mystery of the Mass, and every moment reminds me that I’m part of something much greater than myself.

Serving as an altar server has deepened my faith in unexpected ways. It’s taught me discipline, reverence, and attentiveness. It’s helped me appreciate the details of the liturgy and the beauty of the Catholic tradition. And it’s connected me more deeply to my parish community—people I now serve not just with a smile, but with a sincere heart.

This role may seem quiet or even unnoticed by some, but for me, it’s sacred. I truly believe this is part of God’s calling for my life right now—to assist, to be present, and to grow in faith through service.

To anyone wondering how they can get more involved in their parish, I encourage you to listen for that gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, God opens doors not with a loud bang, but with a soft whisper—an invitation to serve in ways that will bless you more than you could ever imagine.

May your Sunday be filled with grace, peace, and the joy of the Lord. And may we all find our own way to serve Him with love.

In Christ,

Greg
